M.A.I. Monday Motivation: My Independence vs. Back to Dixie

Updated: Jul 25, 2022

Greetings and Good Morning,

I hope all is well! It’s been quite some time since I’ve shared a blog post. I’ve been busy with a newborn and caring for my family. With that being said, I’m back this week with a special post to highlight this week’s podcast episode! As we celebrate “Independence Day,” today, I’m excited to have special guest author, Len Hyde, come on my #podcast this week to talk about his explosive social thriller novel, “Back to Dixie.”

I was so impressed with his book, that I couldn’t put it down. The first chapter will grip you, and if it doesn’t something is wrong with you. If you’re African-American, and you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you’d lost your rights to vote, then you should read this book. The relevancy of this book, and it’s parallels to today’s social and political climate is striking. This book is prophetic to what can happen, if we do not act, and if we’re not engaged in the political process understanding how certain forces and powers that be can undermine our democracy.

I was so grateful and delighted to have met, Mr. Hyde, because, this book has motivated me to take action and become, more active in the political process. Beyond just voting. That has been something that I’ve wanted to do, but didn’t know how or what to do, but the thought of losing my right to vote, and considering the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, just last week, I realize that I can’t sit on the sidelines. This book made it clear to me that I cannot. I hope that you’ll read it, and feel the same way. It is a wake up call for all of us to get involved!

This week, check out our amazing conversation by listening to the audio on streaming platforms or watch on YouTube. This episode will be released on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

About the author: Len Hyde

"I have always appreciated a good story. It doesn’t matter if I was reading it, watching it, or listening to someone tell it. There are few things more satisfying to me than the realization that a group of words I put together conjured up emotion and strong feelings deep within others. Now my soul craves it. - Len Hyde

About the book

Back to Dixie begins with a compassionate government committed to address systemic racism and racial equity issues by passing the SCALE Act for Social Justice in 2023. SCALE will be viewed as the most impactful law for Black people since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. However, Strong America, a conservative organization of powerful businessmen and politicians, vehemently opposed the law. After reshaping Congress, they not only managed to repeal SCALE, but passed a law that removed voting rights from most of the country’s Black and poor population. Their plan to ‘take America back’ was culminated when Willie Earl, Strong America’s hand-picked candidate, won the 2028 presidential election and signed the National Workfare Act into law shortly afterwards.

Under Workfare rules, millions of Black and poor citizens immediately became wards of the federal government, losing all freedoms and forced to work just to survive. Michael, Devin, and Odessa join REACH, a national organization formed to monitor and oppose the efforts of Strong America, in executing a dangerous plan where they risk everything to free millions from what was considered modern-day slavery. Back to Dixie follows the lives of some ordinary and a few not so ordinary people through ten tumultuous years when the political pendulum dramatically swings far left to far right, taking readers on an emotional journey through an alternate reality that is both riveting and terrifying.
